about
THE PHOENIX
[Death & Rebirth]
I created this phoenix symbol in high school. It has become something of a personal emblem. In many ways as I’ve worked on this project and others, that symbol has guided my head, my heart, and my hand.
The Phoenix: Fire. Embers. Ashes. Pain and defeat giving way to glory and triumph. Death bowing to Resurrection and New Life. An ongoing cycle of Death and Rebirth.
As we approach and embrace life, this cycle is inevitable. There are days when I can feel myself dying, when I feel my soul burning away the old to become new again. It’s a painful process, like cutting away a dead or dying branch so that the tree might thrive.
In order to have New Life, you first must die the Old Death.
I live. I die. I live again.
Die. Rise. Die. Rise again. Over and over, better each time.
I never want to stop becoming better. That often requires letting parts of myself - unhealthy, destructive, and dark parts - die and fall away. It feels like death.
But I will die as many times as I have to.
As many times as it takes, I will rise.
