All my life I have heard a song. Its beauty haunts my every step. Its melody is achingly familiar, though I’ve never heard it before. It follows me down through all my days.
But there is something missing. An absent note, a missing refrain.
The deficiency is not in the music, but in my ears. Perhaps they are not ready to hear the fullness of the music. Perhaps I am hearing only in part because that is the only way in which I am capable of listening.
When I hear it, there is a distance to the melody. It is like hearing music from another room. Because this song comes to us from the other side of the door.
Somewhere through the keyhole, there is a land that I know, but to which I’ve never been. I miss this place dearly, though I have never seen it. My heart sings the song of that country, though my lips don’t yet know the words, though my voice is not yet ready for the tune.
In that land there is a city. And that city is coming. A new eternal city. It is on its way even now. Indeed, it is almost here.
The city in the sky.
The castle beyond the clouds.
The kingdom on the other side of the light.
One day I will reach that place, and be united at last with the One whose image I bear, who shaped my ears to hear that song, who molded my heart to long for that land, to ache for the place I’ve never been and was always meant to be.
One day we will take the song out into the glorious streets, and we will walk together through the eternal city, toward the mountain that lies at its center, lifting our voices to the sky, a chorus of unity to our Light and King.
For now, I hear only in part.
But one day I will hear in full. One day the song will be revealed to me, whole and complete and perfect. One day the melody will at last be resolved.
And on that day, I will not only hear the song.
On that day, I will sing it.
